E-visas – UKVI’s Paperless Process

According to news from the UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI), they are developing a digital immigration system that will replace physical documents with online immigration identity records, known as electronic visas (eVisas).

Once the eVisa is implemented, the following documents will be replaced:

🌟 Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

🌟 Biometric Residence Card (BRC)

🌟 Endorsements on passports, such as indefinite leave to enter stamps

🌟 Stickers on passports, such as entry permits or visa stickers

According to statistics, since 2018, millions of people have obtained eVisas online through various routes, including the EU Settlement Scheme.

What is an Electronic Visa (eVisa)?

An eVisa is an online record of immigration identity and permission conditions to enter or stay in the UK. Individuals need to register a UKVI account to conveniently and securely share information related to immigration status with third parties such as employers or landlords.

In the future, individuals will be able to travel to the UK using an eVisa without the need to carry physical documents (except for passports). However, until full implementation, physical documents may still be required if available.

Advantages of eVisas include:

🌟 More secure, reducing the risk of loss, theft, or tampering

🌟 No need to wait for or collect physical documents after a decision is made. However, providing biometric information may still be required in person.

🌟 Faster and more convenient identity verification at the UK border

Why do you need a UKVI account?

Everyone needs to register a UKVI account to view eVisas and information and conditions related to immigration status, such as the right to work or rent in the UK. You can also update personal information, such as contact details or current passport information, through your UKVI account. Registering a UKVI account is free.

It is crucial for everyone to ensure that passport information and other details are up-to-date in their UKVI account. Any changes should be promptly notified to the immigration authorities to facilitate smoother processing at the UK border. For example, if you have updated your passport but are still awaiting confirmation in your UKVI account, it is advisable to carry the old document to avoid unnecessary delays at the border.

How to use my UKVI account?

You can use your UKVI account to view eVisas and information related to immigration status. You can also share your immigration identity information with third parties such as employers or landlords by generating a share code through the View and Prove service. This share code grants temporary access to your immigration identity information. It is not a single unique code and can be applied for as needed.

The UK Home Office will continue to automatically share relevant information about individuals’ immigration status with some government departments and other public institutions.

How to obtain an eVisa and UKVI account?

If you currently have a legal permit to reside in the UK and possess a BRP, BRC, or other physical documents proving immigration status, no action is required at this time. Once you complete the UKVI account registration, you will be able to view your eVisa through the View and Prove service.

In 2024, the UK Home Office will provide updated guidance. Those who need to apply for a UK visa should follow the regular application process for now.
